Student Staff Leaders not only plan and manage events and recruit event supporters, but also promote the ICC’s activities by conducting presentations for local and international visitors to the university, support the everyday operation of the Center through office work, responding to inquiries, and various other tasks. Is it a student club? The Intercultural Communication Center (ICC) is an administrative unit of the Student Affairs Division. The ICC opened in 2006, responding to the requests of students who wanted a place on campus where all students – regardless of background – could meet and interact. Because the ICC is a Waseda University institution, there is no need to become a member, events are open to all Waseda students, and most are completely free! Where can I get information about the ICC's events and activities? Event information is posted regularly on the ICC website, social media accounts and the MyWaseda portal. The surest way to receive the latest information is to subscribe to our ICC News. Feel free to drop by the Lounge too (for hours see below)! When is the ICC open? Normal hours are Monday to Friday, 10:00am – 4:00pm (closed on Saturday, Sunday and school holidays) *Hours vary due to events, etc. For the latest information, please check the calendar. Tell me more about the ICC’s events and activities! The ICC organizes a variety of events and activities to facilitate intercultural exchange and understanding. Specific cultures are introduced through our Country Festivals and various topics of interest are taken up at our casual Themed Cafes and Lunch events. Our popular Language & Culture Exchange (organized at the beginning of each semester) will match you with another student, faculty or staff member, and you teach each other your language and culture. We hold dance and music nights with performances by various student groups and outside organizations; and we organize Field Trips around Japan, from one-day trips to longer ones, for both international and local students. To find out more, check out the List of Events. Can I apply for a staff position at the ICC? The ICC recruits new Student Staff Leaders during the year, and all Waseda students are welcome to apply. Each recruitment is announced on our website, and also via our ICC News email list. To find out more about Student Staff Leaders, check out the information above and our Get Involved page. What is the difference between Student Staff Leaders and Event Supporters? Student Staff Leaders (SSL) are paid part-time staff members. SSLs support the ICC’s daily operation through various office work, event planning and promotion, organizing Event Supporters, and other duties. Event Supporters, on the other hand, help out on a volunteer basis and can be involved in proposing, preparing and hosting a specific event. The level of commitment is up to the individual, and being an Event Supporter is a great way to make new friends and get involved in our events on a deeper level. You can apply as many times as you like depending on your interest and personal schedule. We announce recruitment of Event Supporters via our website and the ICC News mailing list. For more details, check out the Get Involved page. Can I interact with local students at the ICC? Yes! The ICC’s events and programs are usually attended by a mixed group of local (from Japan) and international students. Most local students who come are eager to learn about different cultures and to make friends with their international counterparts. I am not a student at Waseda University. Can I still join ICC events? Some events are open to the public, and others are not. Please check the “Eligibility” for each event. What is the difference between the CIE (Center for International Education) and the ICC (Intercultural Communication Center)? The CIE provides information and services related to study abroad, for students going out from Waseda and coming here from overseas. The ICC provides extracurricular programs on intercultural topics for both international and local students here at Waseda. The CIE and the ICC sometimes collaborate on specific events. Can I introduce my home culture at the ICC? Yes! Please contact us to discuss your ideas, at the Lounge or via email (icc (at) list.waseda.jp). We look forward to hearing from you!
